Compliance at SLT

1 May 2023

All the work that the Specialised Lifting and Transport undertakes, is characterised as very ‘High Risk’.  In order to ensure the safety of our employees, compliance with legislative requirements is critically important.  There is a list of the main areas we need to comply with below this article.

SLT provides all Health, Safety, and Training and Compliance services to the three subsidiaries.  These functions have now been in operation for 2 years and have seen an astonishing improvement in the business’ performance in that period.  A Management Information System based on the Vault Intelligence software has been implemented.  This records all incident and near miss information, provides a framework for Root Cause Analysis of events, and provides automated reminders for any corrective actions.  It also provides a framework for the production of the Job Safety and Environmental Analysis (JSEA) that precedes all major tasks.  We also use Vault Intelligence to track all training requirements, training results, and qualifications.  Vault’s management reporting functions keep the Senior Leadership Team fully informed of current safety issues and trends, and the currency of staff skills and qualifications.

The Machinery Movers division equipped its fleet with the EROAD fleet management system in December 2017.  The weekly Leaderboard and Excess Speed reports are published on the staff noticeboard.  There has been a significant reduction in speeding events since then.  The business philosophy is ‘Coaching for Performance’, and this has resulted in a change in attitude among most of the driving staff and an observable improvement in their level of professionalism.  The reports have also generated competition among most of the drivers as they actively seek to improve their ranking.  Monitoring of the Tranzcarr trucks, all the cranes, and every small vehicle in the fleets of SLT is achieved using the NavMan system.  All our vehicles are equipped with Radio Telephones and most trucks and all the Load Pilot vehicles also have CB radios.

Being able to track our vehicles, and contact them immediately anywhere in the country, is an important control in our SLT Policy – Lone Workers.
